areola-reduction

The areola is a small circular area on the body with a different structure of tissue from the surrounding tissue. The term is most commonly used to denote the pigmented area on the human breast around the nipple. Although the size of the areola is often genetic, it can increase with age as the skin loses elasticity and sags, drastic change of weight or breast implants.

There are no medical reasons to opt for an areola reduction, but if you feel your areolas look large and out of proportion to your breasts, especially after a breast lift or breast reduction surgery. If your areolas have become enlarged or stretched after childbirth or after significant weight gain or if for any other reason, you don’t like the way your areolas look, areola reduction surgery may be for you.

Both man and women can opt for the areola reduction surgery. For men, a large areola is often associated with male breast enlargement (gynecomastia), and has a feminizing effect on the appearance of the breasts.

Areola reduction procedure can be performed solo or can be combined with other procedure as well such as breast lift or breast reduction.

Areola Reduction is a minor surgical procedure, which is often performed under local anesthesia. A round ring-like strip of excess areola will be removed on the peripheral part of the operated areola. The edge of the new smaller areola will be sutured to the outer normal the nipple and central portion of the areola remain attached to the breast, and only the excess, peripheral areola is removed.

Since the pigment is contained in the superficial portion of the skin, only a thin layer needs to be removed. Fine sutures are placed to reap proximate the areola to the surrounding skin.

Sometimes men who are suffering from gynecomastia opt for areola reduction surgery which can reduce the overall size of the pigmented skin around the nipple, and provide a more masculine chest. When the nipple is large, nipple reduction may also be desirable.
